DESCRIPTION:The World of the American Combat Soldier\nSpend some time with the Vietnam War’s often overlooked but incredibly important participants: combat soldiers. Construct a thorough portrait of a typical American grunt from his daily routine in wartime to where he stood in the greater military hierarchy and see how ordinary soldiers weathered brutal combat over the course of a typical 12-month tour. \n \nMovie: “Good Morning Vietnam”\nAcademy Award winner Robin Williams shakes up 1965 Saigon in the role the critics agree he was born to play – irreverent nonconformist DeeJay Adrian Cronauer.  GIs love him – The Brass is not so impressed.  Side splitting Comic bombshells! \n \n

DESCRIPTION:The Gulf of Tonkin and a Crossroads\nA look at pre-cursors to War from the Gulf of Tonkin incident to Rolling Thunder; we explore the ways in which escalating tensions on the ground in Vietnam and domestic political considerations in the United States led to more costly confrontations on the Indochinese Peninsula. Examine how the specter of communism in neighboring Indonesia shaped calculations made by the United States. \n \nMovie: “Platoon”\nPlatoon \, Oscar for Best Picture in 1986 is an American war film written and directed by Oliver Stone\, starring Tom Berenger\, Willem Dafoe\, Charlie Sheen\, Keith David\, Kevin Dillon\, John C. McGinley\, Forest Whitaker\, and Johnny Depp. It is the first film of a trilogy of Vietnam War films directed by Stone\, followed by Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Heaven & Earth (1993). The film\, based on Stone’s experience from the war\, follows a new U.S. Army volunteer (Sheen) serving in Vietnam while his Platoon Sergeant and his Squad Leader (Berenger and Dafoe) argue over the morality in the platoon and of the war itself.

DESCRIPTION:History:  Discussions about Sir Julian Corbett\nBuilding on lessons from Clausewitz and Mahan\, Sir Julian Corbett offered a complete strategy that integrated land and sea operations. You’ll study his text\, Some Principles of Maritime Strategy\, and see how his principles played out in Wellington’s Iberian campaign and in the Russo-Japanese War. \n \nMovie: “Platoon”\nPlatoon is a 1986 American war film written and directed by Oliver Stone\, starring Tom Berenger\, Willem Dafoe\, Charlie Sheen\, Keith David\, Kevin Dillon\, John C.

SUMMARY:SSTEAM-H
DESCRIPTION:History:  Discussions about Alfred Thayer Mahan\nMeet the first of this course’s naval masters of war. Impressed by the audacity of Lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar\, Mahan’s grand naval strategy was that a concentrated fleet and a global network of naval bases were the keys to naval dominance\, which\, in turn\, would lead to economic prosperity. \n \nMovie: “Letters from Iwo Jima”\nA 2006 Japanese-language American war film directed and co-produced by Clint Eastwood\, starring Ken Watanabe and Kazunari Ninomiya. The film portrays the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers and is a companion piece to Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers\, which depicts the same battle from the American viewpoint; the two films were shot back to back. Letters from Iwo Jima is almost entirely in Japanese\, despite being co-produced by American companies DreamWorks Pictures\, Malpaso Productions and Amblin Entertainment. \n \n

SUMMARY:SSTEAM-H
DESCRIPTION:History:  Discussions about Clausewitz On War\nThis lecture introduces you to Carl von Clausewitz\, who might be the most influential modern master of war. His key ideas—the paradoxical trinity\, assessing the international context\, striking the enemy’s center of gravity\, and the principle of continuity—make Clausewitz the “master’s master” and provide the basis for modern military strategy. \n \nMovie: ‘The Patriot’\nA widowed farmer\, with a brave but brutal military past\, decides not to join up when the British arrive in 1776. However\, when his son enlists and is later captured by the enemy\, the former soldier must abandon his new-found pacifist principles in order to rescue his oldest child\, and forms a regiment of Carolina patriots\, whose guerrilla tactics prove pivotal to the US war effort.

SUMMARY:SSTEAM-H
DESCRIPTION:History: Thucydides on Strategy\nTake a systematic look at what makes Thucydides perhaps history’s first great strategist. In his analysis of the Peloponnesian War\, he examines the political origins of the war\, the Spartan and Athenian leadership\, and the social and moral implications of war—all in an effort to prevent future generations from repeating Athens’ mistakes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMovie: A Call To Spy\nThe film is a heavily fictionalized historical drama inspired by the lives of three women who worked as British spies during World War II. In many important respects the plot deviates quite widely from actual events and from their real-life missions. It stars Sarah Megan Thomas\, Radhika Apte and Stana Katic.
